Fifty rooms, and a reception with nowhere to hide the track

The job

A hospitality destination built for celebrations and gatherings — a resort whose reputation already rested on its team and its food.

Every furnished surface in the place: fifty guest rooms, the reception, the common areas and the outdoor spaces. The brief was to make it read as a premium resort while surviving hospitality use — washable, hard-wearing, easy to maintain, and comfortable enough that a guest books again. Curtains and roller blinds throughout, custom furniture inside and out, contract mattresses, 400–600 TC linen and pillows, sofas, upholstered headboards, and the light control and blackout each room needed. The furniture alone ran to close to 1,200 pieces across the outdoor spaces, the poolside, the restaurant and the convention hall.

What it looks like

Fresh, warm and understated rather than formal. Fabrics were chosen for performance as much as for looks, because a resort textile that cannot be washed is a textile that will be replaced. Layered curtains with blackout behind them give each room privacy and a way to soften the daylight.

What we had to sort out

The reception had no provision for a pelmet, so the track was always going to be visible. Rather than hide it badly we made it part of the detailing — a black track, read as an architectural line instead of as something left exposed.

Several spaces taper, which can make a room feel like it is closing in. The curtains were scaled and placed to work against that: enough height, fullness and fall to draw the eye up and give the geometry somewhere to go.
