The job
A young couple, both IT professionals, after a home that felt elevated without being precious about it — special enough to be worth doing, practical enough to live in on a weekday.
A complete soft-furnishing and furniture package for the flat: curtains, roller blinds and blackout specified room by room, furniture built to the dimensions the rooms actually had rather than bought to a standard size, and the sleep end done properly — mattresses, 400–600 TC linen and pillows. Window treatments were specified for safety and easy operation as well as for looks.
What it looks like
Warm and deliberate rather than neutral. The living room runs cream and rust over brass — a printed curtain with a rust velvet panel at the leading edge and a striped fringe at the hem, against panelling and a marble top. The bedroom goes darker and quieter: charcoal upholstery, a burgundy velvet headboard panel, and a curtain banded and fringed in the same burgundy so the two rooms are recognisably one flat without repeating themselves.
What we had to sort out
The windows are full height and give the flat its light, which is the thing nobody wants to give up and the thing that makes privacy and blackout hard. One treatment cannot do all three jobs, and layering them badly is how a window ends up looking heavy from inside and cluttered from the road.
So each layer was given one job and only one. A sheer against the glass keeps the room bright and stops anyone seeing in during the day. The printed curtain in front of it carries the privacy and most of the warmth. Roller blinds and blackout handle the bedrooms, where the requirement is darkness rather than softening. Drawn back, the stack sits off the glass so the window still reads as full height.
Getting three layers to look like one is a hardware problem before it is a fabric one. Every window was measured on site before anything was cut, because the tracks, the rod and the blind all have to clear each other and the mosquito mesh behind them, and an inch found late is an inch that shows.

After. Layered treatments that give the family full control of light and privacy through the day, bedrooms that go properly dark, and furniture built to the rooms rather than fitted into them.
