Most people replace a mattress when the pillow was the problem. The right height depends on whether you sleep on your side, your back or your front, and on how much your shoulder lifts you off the bed.

Which one do you need?
“I wake up with a stiff neck”
Almost always pillow height, not the mattress. Lying on your side, your nose should line up with the middle of your chest — if your head tips down towards the bed the pillow is too low.
“I sleep on my side and keep stacking two pillows”
Two pillows bend the neck rather than support it. One taller pillow does the job properly; a side sleeper usually needs the height of their shoulder.
“My pillow goes flat in a few months”
Fibre compresses and doesn’t come back. Foam or latex holds its height for years, at a higher price up front.
“It gets too warm under my head”
Memory foam traps heat. Latex or a fibre pillow with a cotton cover sleeps considerably cooler.
