The job
A family taking possession of a bare-shell villa, doing the kitchen before they moved in rather than around themselves afterwards.
A full modular kitchen for an empty room: an L on two walls with a free-standing island, built-in oven and microwave, an appliance bay that closes, and the chimney duct dealt with rather than left to be boxed in later.
What it looks like
High-gloss navy on every run, against a patterned yellow and white splashback carried full height between the counter and the wall units, and light quartz on both the counters and the island top. Handleless throughout — a slim pull profile across the base drawers and a matching one under every wall unit — so nothing stands proud and the whole run reads as one plane.
What we had to sort out
The room was a bare shell, which is the best moment to arrive and the easiest one to waste. The drain fixes the sink, the outside wall fixes the hob, and both were settled before the tiling closed — so the layout was decided by the plumbing rather than negotiated against it later. That sequence is the whole reason the job ran without a fight.
The island had to earn its floor rather than fill the middle of the room. It carries prep and seating and no hob, so the fire stayed on the wall run where a duct can leave the building by the shortest route — an island hob here would have meant an opening through the slab and a builder’s permission.
The chimney was boxed into the run to the ceiling and the oven and microwave went into a tall housing away from the hob, so nobody is reaching past a flame to open a hot door and there is no pipe left showing above the wall units.

After. A finished kitchen with drawers rather than cupboards through the base run, the appliances housed where they are used, and an island the family can sit at while somebody cooks.
