For the wall that paint keeps letting down
Panelling does two things paint and paper cannot: it hides a wall that was never flat, and it adds depth you can see from across the room. It also goes onto a wall that will not stay perfectly dry, which is where wallpaper fails.

Vertical ribs in MDF or WPC. Adds height and hides an uneven wall.
best for bed heads, entrance lobbies and the wall behind a TV
Charcoal panels
Bamboo charcoal wall panels — fluted or flat, and far quicker to put up than carpentry on site.
Acoustic slat panels
Wood slats on a felt backing that soften echo as well as look good.
best for media rooms, studios, hard-floored living rooms
Wainscoting and mouldings
Framed panels, painted to the wall or against it.
best for older houses and anything wanting a classical read
WPC and PVC panels
Take damp far better than MDF, so they suit external-facing walls.
Which one do you need?
“The wall is uneven and paint shows every flaw”
Fluted or slat panelling. The ribs break up the surface so the eye stops reading the wall behind them — it is the reason most people end up here.
“The wall is damp and wallpaper keeps failing”
Panelling on battens leaves an air gap behind it, so the finish is not stuck to the damp surface. WPC or PVC rather than MDF, which swells. Deal with the source of the damp as well.
“The room echoes”
Acoustic slat panels on one wall. Hard floors and glass make a room ring; soft surfaces are what stop it, and felt-backed slats do it without looking like acoustic treatment.
“The ceiling feels low”
Vertical fluting. The ribs draw the eye up the wall, and the room reads taller than the tape measure says it is.
“I want it in a rented flat”
Panelling fixed in a way that can be taken down and made good. Say so before we start — it changes the fixing entirely.
