The job
A family furnishing a child’s room around a new baby, and asking at the start what the room becomes in five years rather than at the end.
One room — wallpaper, a custom L-shaped headboard, mattresses and a rug cut for that floor — with every piece of it specified so that none of it is the thing holding the room back later.
What it looks like
Football, but kept to one wall and one rug rather than let loose over the whole room. An illustrated player across the papered wall in green and sand, raised gold lettering beside it, three football wall lights down the fluted green return, a lit arched niche for the trophy, and a pitch-marked rug made for this floor. The furniture is deliberately quiet against all of that: an oatmeal upholstered headboard with a single dark timber inlay running through it, on dark timber frames.
What we had to sort out
A headboard on one side leaves the other two open, and this family wanted the bed enclosed. So it wraps two sides in an L rather than sitting across the head — and it is built to lift off. What suits a household with a small child in it does not have to be what the room is at nine, and the room is not committed to it.
The two beds are one surface now and two later. Pushed together they read as a single wide platform; taken apart they are a single and a double, which is what the same furniture becomes once the early years are over. Specifying it that way round costs nothing at the time and saves buying the room twice.
The mattress was chosen on the same argument. MM Foam’s Dual Harmony is reversible — medium one side, firm the other — so it can be turned over as what suits the sleeper changes, subject to the manufacturer’s guidance and anything your own doctor says. It carries a ten-year warranty, and what is right in year one is not necessarily right in year six.
The theme had to be enjoyable without dating the room. Paper and rug carry all of it and both can be changed on their own; the headboard, the beds and the mattresses underneath are plain enough to survive the child going off football.
