How to buy a mattress in Hyderabad

Most mattress advice tells you which mattress to buy. Nobody can, including us — firmness depends on your weight and how you sleep, not on what a label says, and the only way to know is to lie on it. What we can tell you is how to shop for one here without wasting three Saturdays, and what to check before you pay.

Test it properly, or the visit was pointless

Ten to fifteen minutes on a mattress, in the position you actually sleep in. Not sitting on the edge for thirty seconds with your shoes on.

• Lie the way you sleep. If you are a side sleeper, lie on your side long enough for your shoulder to settle.
• Bring your own pillow if you can, or ask for one the height of yours. Pillow height changes how firm a mattress feels at the shoulders and neck more than most people expect.
• Roll from side to back. A mattress that fights you when you turn will wake you at three in the morning.
• If you share a bed, test it together. Motion transfer and edge support only show up with two people on it.
• Sit on the edge. If it collapses, getting out of bed will be a small annoyance every day for eight years.

A rough guide to where to start, though the mattress decides, not the rule:

• Side sleepers need give at the shoulder and hip. Too firm and you will feel pressure at both.
• Back sleepers usually want medium-firm — enough support that the lower back does not dip.
• Front sleepers generally need firmer, to stop the waist sinking.
• Couples should ask about motion isolation and edge support before anything else.
• Hot sleepers should ask about airflow, the top fabric, and latex or spring construction rather than trusting a name with "cool" in it.
• Guest rooms and children — durability and easy cleaning matter more than the features you are paying for in a main bedroom.

Which mattress type suits a Hyderabad bedroom

Heat is the local variable, and it is worth thinking about before firmness.

Hyderabad gives you eight hot months and a humid monsoon in the middle. Dense memory foam holds heat — it softens against your body, which is what it is for, but the same closeness traps warmth. In an air-conditioned room that is a non-issue. In a room with a fan, on a May night, it is the difference between sleeping and not.

Latex and pocket spring both move air better. Latex is naturally more open and stays responsive rather than sinking; pocket spring has actual air between the coils. Coir is firmer and breathes well, which is why it has never gone out of use here. If your bedroom does not have air conditioning, that is the honest reason to look at latex, spring or coir before foam — not because foam is worse, but because it is warmer.

Humidity is the second one. A mattress against a damp outside wall, or on a solid platform base with no ventilation underneath, will hold moisture. A slatted base or an occasional turn solves it. Nobody mentions this in a showroom and it is the most common cause of a mattress smelling wrong after two monsoons.

Compare the delivered price, not the sticker

This is where most money is lost, and it has nothing to do with the mattress.

A discount on a price you cannot verify is not a discount. Ask every store the same eight questions and write the answers down:

• The exact model name, size, thickness and firmness — not "the medium one".
• Today’s selling price against the printed MRP.
• Whether delivery is free to your pin code, and what it costs if not.
• Whether it arrives compressed in a roll or full size. A rolled mattress needs time and space to recover.
• The warranty period, and specifically what sagging depth is covered. "Ten-year warranty" means very little until you know the depth.
• Trial, return or exchange eligibility — in writing, on the invoice, not as a verbal assurance.
• Whether pillows, a protector or any accessory is in the price or added after.
• The same model’s online price, checked on your phone before you pay.

A cheaper mattress with no return option can be worth less than a costlier one you can send back. And a written quotation beats anything anybody says across a counter.

Sizes are in inches here

Everyone in this city asks for mattresses in inches, and it is worth being precise because a mattress that is an inch out is a mattress you live with.

Measure your bed frame inside edge to inside edge, not the outside of the frame and not the old mattress — an old mattress has spread. Common sizes are 72×36 single, 78×60 queen and 78×72 king, but plenty of beds in Hyderabad flats are built to the room rather than to a standard, and a made-to-order size is ordinary rather than exotic.

Then check the route: the lift, the staircase turn, and the doorway. A king mattress that will not go round a landing is a problem discovered on delivery day, and it is discovered often.

King Koil is the global pocket-spring name most people already recognise. What makes it useful here is not the badge — it is that you can step off a King Koil onto an MM Foam latex or a Springfit hybrid without driving across the city and losing the comparison in the traffic.

If King Koil is what brought you in, these are the three to lie on:

• PhysioPedic — the orthopaedic one, built around posture alignment. Try it as a back sleeper first, then roll to your side.
• Comfort Sense — organic latex with memory foam quilted over it. The latex core breathes; the quilting is what makes it feel soft. If your room runs hot, that quilting is the part to think about.
• World Luxury — foam layers over a pocket spring core. Fine in an air-conditioned bedroom, and warmer than a plain latex on a fan-only night in May.

And ask for the exact model name, thickness and warranty depth in writing. "King Koil" on a verbal quote is not a model, and it is not something you can hold anybody to later.

MM Foam, in the room

MM Foam list us as their exclusive store in Hyderabad, so the whole range is on the floor rather than the two or three models a general dealer carries. They have made latex in India since 1957.

Latex is the one to try first if your bedroom runs hot — it moves air in a way dense memory foam does not, which in a fan-only room in May is the difference between sleeping and not.

Where to start, depending on what you are after:

One care note people skip: latex should not be left in the sun, and a mattress that gets damp in the monsoon should be dried under a fan rather than out on the terrace. That is the manufacturer’s own instruction, not ours.

Before you pay

• Photograph the product label and the quotation.
• Read the warranty terms, not the warranty headline.
• Confirm who handles a service claim — the store, the brand, or a dealer. They are not the same and it matters when something goes wrong.
• Keep the invoice, the warranty card and the order messages together.
• Ask how long delivery takes, and whether they will take the old mattress away.

Two focused visits will teach you more than a week of scrolling. Bring your pillow, wear something you can lie down in, and do not buy the first mattress that feels better than the one you are replacing — that is a low bar, and everything in the room will clear it.
